Full Artist's statement
Can we escape the conflict that surrounds us? However practical or necessary, how does security’s growing presence affect the ways we experience one another? These are just a few of the questions I raise through my work out of common, everyday things. Through the context of these materials—their purpose and place in our lives—I explore inherent values and meanings, fascinated by the intricacies of our relationships as well as the contradictions that often dictate the ways we move around in the world.
In practice, this involves breaking down materials from junk mail to discarded clothing, seeking out color and shape, and building them into structural collages. Preserved with resin, my work takes on a jewel-like finish, highlighting both the beauty and mystery of the conversation it aims to create.
Since 2017, I've focused on the creation of a series of large pieces out of encyclopedias, examining the changes in how we think about and share information and the many ways that alters how we interpret ourselves and others.
